Collection: Bed 05

Most oak bed frames give you a hard headboard to lean against. The Bed 05 doesn't. It pairs a solid oak frame, in an oak or walnut finish, with a headboard pad upholstered in linen, velvet or real leather.

A solid oak bed frame, softened where it matters

The Bed 05 is built around strong architectural lines: a squared frame, a slatted back, and rounded corners on the headboard frame and legs that keep the whole thing from feeling severe. The headboard frame and feet are solid oak, with white oak veneer across the back slats, the side rails and the footboard. Choose an oak finish to keep the grain light and the room feeling open, or a walnut stain for a deeper, warmer tone. Either way the natural grain still shows through, and it varies a little from bed to bed. The range covers UK Double (145.5cm wide), UK King (160.5cm) and UK Super King (190.5cm).

Choose your headboard fabric

The headboard pad comes in Linen Oatmeal, a warm neutral oatmeal beige, Velvet Vine, a deep dark forest green, or Leather Maple, a warm mid-tone tan in real semi-aniline leather. On the leather option, expect the colour to shift and soften with use, the way real leather does. Not sure which way to go? Order a free fabric sample before you buy.

Your mattress sits inside the frame, not on top of it

The side rails sit slightly higher than the slat base, so the mattress drops into a recess rather than perching on top. It looks neater, it stops the mattress sliding around in the night, and it means the bed reads as one clean shape rather than a frame with a mattress balanced on it. Underneath, a durable engineered wood slat system does the supporting. Because of the recessed design, it is worth confirming your mattress measures 135 x 190cm for the Double, 150 x 200cm for the King, or 180 x 200cm for the Super King.

Fabric straps and brass detailing

Straps reach over the top of the headboard and are secured with a brass detail, joining the upholstered pad to the oak frame. It is a small thing, and it is the detail most people notice first: a considered join between the soft part and the structural part, rather than a headboard simply bolted on. The Bed 05 arrives in two boxes, sized to get through the tightest hallways and up the awkward stairs, and assembly is light and familiar, done by two people with the hardware pack and instructions included.

Bed 05 FAQs

We answer your Bed 05 questions

Is an oak bed frame worth it?

Oak is one of the harder timbers used in furniture, which is why oak beds tend to outlast softwood frames by a good margin. It also holds a finish well, so an oak stain stays light and open while a walnut stain gives real depth, without hiding the grain underneath. On the Bed 05, the headboard frame and the feet are solid oak, with white oak veneer across the slats, side rails and footboard.

What is a bed frame with an upholstered headboard?

It is a bed where the frame is timber but the headboard is padded and covered in fabric or leather rather than left as bare wood. You get the structure and grain of a wooden frame with a soft surface to lean against, which suits anyone who reads or watches TV in bed. The Bed 05 headboard pad comes in linen, velvet or real leather.

Should I choose the oak or the walnut finish?

Neither is better, they just read differently in a room. An oak finish keeps the natural grain light and makes a bedroom feel more open, which tends to work well in smaller or darker rooms. A walnut stain gives the same oak a deeper, warmer tone that sits better with darker walls and richer textiles. Both are solid oak underneath.

What is a slatted bed frame?

A slatted bed frame supports the mattress on a series of wooden slats rather than a solid base. Slats let air circulate under the mattress, which helps it last longer, and they give a slight amount of flex. The Bed 05 uses a durable engineered wood slat system.

Do I need a specific mattress size for the Bed 05?

Yes, and it is worth measuring before you order. The side rails sit above the slat base so the mattress is recessed into the frame, which looks neat but means the fit matters more than on a flat-topped frame. UK Double takes a 135 x 190cm mattress, UK King takes 150 x 200cm, and UK Super King takes 180 x 200cm.

Why does the wood grain look different on each bed?

Because it is real wood. Solid oak and white oak veneer both carry natural grain variation, so no two frames are identical. The same goes for the Leather Maple headboard, where the colour varies slightly across the hide. It is a characteristic of natural materials rather than a fault.
