Struggling with Cold Nights? Here Are 10 Ways to Stay Warm Whilst You Sleep

When winter rolls in and your bedroom feels like the inside of a fridge, getting comfy can be… well, a bit of a nightmare. If you are sick of doing that awkward shivery shimmy under the covers, we have good news. Staying warm at night is easier than it seems, and you do not need to sleep in seventeen layers or keep your heating on till your bank account cries.

Here are our favourite little hacks to keep you toasty till morning.

1. Layer your bedding like a pro

Layers are your secret weapon. Start with a breathable fitted sheet, add a duvet that pulls its weight, then finish with a chunky throw. Natural materials like cotton or wool are great for keeping things warm without turning you into a human furnace.

2. Swap out your sheets for winter-friendly fabrics

If you usually sleep in crisp cotton, you will notice the difference straight away. Brushed cotton, flannel or fleece bedding hold onto warmth beautifully. Basically, they are the textile equivalent of a warm hug.

3. Pre-heat your bed

Hot-water bottles, warm wheat bags or an electric blanket are absolute game-changers. Pop one under the duvet ten minutes before you get in. It is like climbing into a freshly baked pastry, but, you know, less buttery.

4. Close those curtains early

Windows are notorious heat stealers. Thick or thermal curtains help keep the warm air where it belongs. Get them closed as soon as the sun disappears and your room will feel instantly snug.

5. Give your furniture a little shuffle

Your bed’s location matters more than you think. If it is hugging an external wall or a draughty window, you are basically sleeping next to a cold front. Nudging it toward the centre of the room can help loads.

6. Add a rug for cosy vibes

Hard floors get chilly and steal heat faster than you can say “should have worn socks”. A rug helps insulate the room and makes everything feel softer and warmer.

7. Try a warmer mattress or topper

Memory foam mattresses naturally hold onto heat, so if yours feels a bit cool, a foam or wool topper can work wonders. It is like giving your bed a winter coat.

8. Dress for cosy success

No need to wear skiing thermals, but warm socks, soft long sleeves and lightweight pyjamas help your body stay warm with less effort. Bonus: being snug is extremely cute.

9. Sip and snack thoughtfully

A warm tea or a light snack before bed can gently nudge your internal temperature up. Nothing heavy, just something comforting. Think chamomile, mint tea or a slice of toast. It is basically self-care disguised as a bedtime ritual.

10. Block out the draughts

Cold air sneaking under doors can undo all your hard work. Pop a draught excluder or rolled-up blanket at the gap and enjoy your newly upgraded warmth levels.

Time to get cosy

Cold nights do not stand a chance with a few simple tweaks. A bit of layering here and a touch of bedroom TLC there and suddenly you are drifting off in a snug little cloud of warmth. Sweet dreams and stay toasty.
