Something special is coming to Swyft, and with it, a good night's sleep. We sat down with Design Director, John, and got the lowdown on Swyft's latest venture: Mattress 03.

What inspired the design of this new mattress?

We wanted to do something genuinely different, to create a mattress that reflected Swyft’s design ethos of flexibility, innovation, and thoughtful living.

The inspiration came from seeing how people’s lifestyles have evolved; homes are more dynamic, and furniture needs to adapt. We wanted to bring the same clever design thinking we’re known for into the world of sleep. The result is a mattress that offers both adaptability and longevity, giving customers more choice in how they sleep and live.

Can you walk us through the materials and construction choices?

Every element was selected with comfort, durability, and practicality in mind. The mattress combines high-resilience foam with pocket springs. The springs form a robust, supportive base that maintains structure over time, while the foam layers above are engineered for comfort.

Each comfort level is achieved through a unique combination of foams, precisely cut and layered to deliver the desired feel, whether that’s firm, medium, or soft. Around the sides, we’ve added a mesh fabric for breathability, helping regulate temperature throughout the night.

The base is wrapped in a durable, long-lasting fabric that’s easy to maintain and spot-clean, while a custom-designed branded zip connects the top and base. The large teeth ensure smooth operation and long-term durability, adding both a functional and aesthetic touch.

What makes this mattress different from others on the market?

The standout feature is its modularity. Unlike traditional mattresses, you can change or replace just the top section without discarding the entire mattress. This not only makes it easier for customers to adjust comfort levels over time but also reduces waste, making it a more sustainable approach to sleep.

Customers can choose to purchase the full mattress (base and top) or simply the top section, which doubles as a high-quality mattress topper that fits securely onto an existing mattress via four elasticated straps. It’s all about flexibility, longevity, and giving people more control over their comfort.

How did you approach balancing comfort, support, and aesthetics?

It was a truly iterative process that took around 12 months and involved several prototypes. We tested with a wide range of users to find the right balance. Comfort and support were fine-tuned through extensive feedback and sleep trials, while we leaned on the expertise of our manufacturing and retail partners, who have over 15 years of experience in mattress design.

Aesthetics were just as important to us. Every design detail was carefully considered, from colour separation to oversized labels and the positioning of zips, ensuring that form and function work hand in hand. We wanted it to look as good as it feels, with visual cues that also enhance usability.

What feedback did you get during the testing phase that influenced the final design?

The testing phase was invaluable. We received feedback on comfort levels; some testers found early versions too firm, others too soft, so we refined the construction of both the base and top layers to achieve the right balance.

We also took on board comments about the finer details, such as the colour palette, fabric choices, zip design, stitch detailing, and proportions of the layers. Every small adjustment helped shape a final product that feels carefully considered and genuinely comfortable.

What’s the one thing you hope people notice first when they try it?

That moment when they lie down and think, this feels right. We hope people immediately notice how well it meets their comfort expectations, that balance of softness, support, and breathability that leads to a great night’s sleep. It should feel instantly familiar yet distinctly better.

Do you have any tips for making the most out of this mattress?

To keep your mattress in top condition, rotate it 180 degrees every six months to ensure even wear. The outer cover of the top section can also be removed and washed when needed, helping keep things fresh. With a little care, this mattress is designed to last for years while maintaining that just-right comfort night after night.

Mattress 03 will be available from 14/11/2025.
